We’re thrilled to announce that we are expanding our team! We’re searching for two individuals who would love to be part of a rapidly-growing local coffee roaster and café full of meticulous and mindful individuals with similar interests and values and to ensure our standards for quality are upheld. Café Virtuoso is the only 100 percent certified organic specialty coffee roaster in San Diego and we pride ourselves on procuring the highest quality organic specialty coffee and tea while remaining ethically invested in full-scale sustainability and socially-responsible practices.

The first role we are looking to fill is for a Barista in our retail cafe. We are also searching for an Assistant Trainer/ Account Manager for our wholesale division. The job description and qualifications are listed below for each role.

Barista

Position Summary

Prepare a variety of coffee beverages. Prepare and resell various hot and cold beverages, including bottled and canned drinks. Sell retail prepared foods including, but not limited to, muffins, bars, bagels, and various snacks. This position requires heavy customer contact and excellent customer service skills. A positive attitude is required at all times in order to ensure the return of our customers who are the reason for our business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Prepare hot and cold beverages.
    • Ability to multitask while accurately preparing beverages to speck and providing excellent service to customers.
    • Prepare of prepared foods for resale.
    • Accurately handle cash and reconcile change due to customers.
    • Open and/or close the coffeehouse as scheduled.
    • Maintains cleanliness in every area of the store at all times.
    • Delivers quality customer service at all times.
    • Assist customers with selecting whole bean and tea retail options, as well as general knowledge of manual brewing devices.
    • Assist wholesale customers with pre-ordered pick-up orders when necessary.
  • Presents a positive attitude towards their job.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

    • High School Diploma or GED graduate.
    • 3 months or more of Barista experience, or certificate of completion of a barista training program.
    • Ability to handle stress under pressure.
    • Ability to provide quality customer service.
    • Ability to learn and use technical equipment (e.g. espresso machine).
    • Ability to accurately exchange currency with the customers.
  • Ability to reconcile all cash and currency.
    • Willingness to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe working environment.
    • Ability to learn and use the company computer to input data.
    • Ability to coordinate multiple activities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision

Training

Newly-hired baristas will be put through a two-week training period in which the Café manager will train the individual for café procedures, drink recipes, side work duties, and cash register. At the end of this two-week period, individuals will undergo a training test to prove knowledge of drink recipes, quality, and appearance of a variety of drinks. New baristas will also be responsible for learning the shorthand for drink sleeves and will be tested on these abbreviations as well.

Since we are a wholesale coffee roasting company, it is of the utmost importance to gain the necessary knowledge regarding our coffees. It is your responsibility to try all of our coffees and to learn the characterizations for each in order to better assist the retail coffee bean customer. The Café Manager will periodically test you on coffee descriptions.

From time to time there are opportunities to attend Industry events such as SCA conferences, Barista competitions and varying SCA functions/ industry events. Time and funding permitted, the company will support you in your efforts to advance your professional knowledge.

Side Work

Working in the Café can be challenging at times when there is a customer rush, but there are also down times in which every employee must find appropriate side work to complete. Options of necessary side work include but are not limited to:

    • Restocking – retail shelves, pastries, cups, lids, utensils, sleeves, etc.
    • Complete inventory checks when needed
    • Cleaning
    • Testing espresso shot quality
    • Adhering CV stickers to cups
  • Practicing and perfecting Latte Art

Assistant Trainer/ Account Manager

Position Summary

Provides administrative and training support for the wholesale department. This position works closely with QA, sales team, service department and customer service to ensure all current and new customers are cared for. Educator is expected to share time between retail, wholesale and roasting facility.

Essential Functions

    • Maintains and updates service and sales related training manuals.
    • Coordinates and manages the onboarding process for new wholesale accounts.
    • Complete step by step onboarding process ordering guides for new customers through BlueCart.
    • Wholesale and retail coffee education and barista training.
    • Assist new or existing clients in menu and drink implementation.
    • Coordinate and execute special event functions and cuppings, presentations, and public tastings and search for ways to refine and improve customer engagement.
    • Initiate and participate in retail sales initiatives as they relate to coffee and tea education.
    • Proactively engage customers through dialogue around coffee and tea education.
    • Monitor espresso drinks, all versions of brew-to-order coffee and tea.
    • Conduct staff cuppings and tea tastings, focused time on bar, group training and product demonstrations.
    • Work with wholesale accounts- on an individual or group basis- to ensure that staff is confident in their drink preparation skills.
    • Act as an ambassador by maintaining strong relationships with marketing, QA, retail and managers/owners.
    • Continuously seek out education for wholesale accounts and retail, incorporating innovative and avant-garde ideas and initiatives into the evolving training program.
  • Research, suggest and implement new brewing methods and merchandising opportunities.

Job Requirements

    • Coffee education and/or experience.
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2) years of work experience in the specialty coffee industry (retail or wholesale) is preferred.
  • A strong desire to pursue SCA certification and willingness to adapt to Café Virtuoso best practices.
