Thrifty Thursdays brings in the hip, young crowd of san diegan’s for half off pizza during senior citizen time, reinventing what it means to catch the “early bird special.”  The place was packed.  Reservations are a must at this incredibly adorable restaurant where you can almost taste the farmers love and smell the soil richness from their locally packed food menu.  Their beet salad was to die for – tempura avocado and goat cheese, yum! Local beers on tap to top everything off – such an incredible experience.  And their decor looks like you are walking straight into a page from anthropologie’s lifestyle blog, absolutely adorable.  All around a great restaurant and an awesome wholesale account :)

SanDiego.com Raves Café Virtuoso Best Organic Coffee in San Diego

As the editor of SanDiego.com, I have the opportunity to get to know local businesses from large hotels to intimate coffee shops and I always love coming across a pleasant surprise. Café Virtuoso in Barrio Logan is just that. It’s hidden and quaint in a red brick building right in the heart of the barrio and serves the best chai latte I’ve found in San Diego. It’s creamy yet light and smooth while bounding with flavor and a little bite, but that’s not all this organic coffee and tea company has to offer.

Just south of East Village and PETCO Park, Café Virtuoso brings a welcome light to this transitional neighborhood. A great cup of coffee and a friendly atmosphere has made this coffee shop a hipster hangout and morning ritual for local professionals in the area, but this isn’t just another coffee shop. Café Virtuoso is actually a wholesale organic coffee and tea company that produces such a unique and high quality product that locals began to complain they couldn’t buy it at the source, and so began the coffee shop and wholesale warehouse in one. What started as a wholesale coffee company in the owner’s garage just six years ago, has now flourished to be an in demand product throughout San Diego County. Serving local big names like Cucina Urbana, Mister A’s and Croce’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar in the Gaslamp Quarter, Café Virtuoso manages to stand out among the countless coffee companies in San Diego. So, what makes their coffee different from all the others? It’s the amazing passion and meticulous practices of the owners and staff that go into making each delicious cup.

No detail goes untouched when it comes to making the perfect cup of coffee and Café Virtuoso embodies this ideal. From keeping extremely high standards in brewing including water quality and temperature, to upholding true organic practices complete with full certification, Café Virtuoso is a cut above the rest when it comes to quality you can taste. It’s the little things that really make a difference, like cleaning the roaster weekly to maintain a fresh taste and high quality product, to buying a smaller quantity of coffee beans from each crop to make sure their roasting the freshest product possible. Serving the best tasting and freshest coffees and teas isn’t just a process, it’s an art at Café Virtuoso and their extensive barista and roaster training process proves just that.

Café Virtuoso has also earned a Fair Trade certification. This means the famers and workers from all over the world who help produce these high quality coffees and teas are fairly compensated. One such example is the Congo coffee farm where many of the farmers lost their husbands during the coffee smuggling process. Through this loss, they decided to come together and create a better way, producing and marketing some of the finest coffee in the world. Through Fair Trade practices, these farmers have now begun to expand and rebuild creating a better way of life for them and their families.

For locals, Café Virtuoso is definitely worth a trip to Barrio Logan, but if the barrio isn’t your “cup of tea,” Café Virtuoso’s products can also be found at the Little Italy Mercato on Saturdays from 8am – 2pm. Being a part of the charming Little Italy Mercato makes it easy for visitors to get in on all the Café Virtuoso coffee action with a great central location near many popular San Diego hotels. The Little Italy Mercato is just minutes from the San Diego International Airport, Gaslamp Quarter and local hotels like the DoubleTree Hotel Downtown San Diego and the La Pensione Hotel in the heart of Little Italy.

Locals and visitors alike will love the striking flavor, extremely high quality and strong business ethics of this great local coffee shop and wholesale distributor. So, come see what all the hype is about and experience some of the best organic coffee in San Diego at Café Virtuoso!
